Croc Hunters Responsible for Lolong Capture to Help in Search for Ligots

“Itong species na’to ng buwaya ay kilala sa pagiging garapal sa pera at salapi. Kahit magutom at maghirap na ang ibang tao basta may pera sila at maayos buhay nila.”

(Manila) Wildlife officials and professional crocodile hunters who participated in the successful capture of the giant saltwater crocodile ‘Lolong’ in Agusan del Sur have been tapped by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to aid in the hunt for former military comptroller Jacinto Ligot and his wife Erlinda Ligot according to NBI Spokesman James Patongo.

“Who better to track these crocodiles than crocodile hunters?” Patongo told reporters in a press conference Saturday afternoon.

The Ligots have been fugitives since 21 October 2011 when the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) received a Return of Warrant of Arrest after arresting officials found that the couple no longer resided in their Taguig address.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue filed a case against the couple in March for failing to declare their income amounting to almost P460 million  from 2001 to 2004. The BIR also estimates that the Ligots failed to pay taxes in the millions of pesos for those years.

Arnel Pedrigo of the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center (PWRCC) said during the same conference that their efforts at tracking and capturing the Ligots will mostly be put into the same snares they used for capturing Lolong in Agusan del Sur.

“Ang mga ganitong buwaya kailangan lang alam mo kung saan maglalagay ng patibong. Tsaka siguro kailangang palitan ang pain… pero ang buwaya ay buwaya kahit saan pa ito nakatira.” Pedrigo explained.

(“With these kinds of crocodiles, you just need to know where to place your traps. Also we’ll probably have to change the bait… but crocodiles are crocodiles wherever they might live.”)

Pedrigo further explained that the specific species of crocodile the Ligots fall under is special because it is worse than saltwater crocodiles in just about all aspects.

“Itong species na’to ng buwaya ay kilala sa pagiging garapal sa pera at salapi. Kahit magutom at maghirap na ang ibang tao basta may pera sila at maayos buhay nila.” Pedrigo said.

(“This species of crocodile is known for being greedy when it comes to money. They don’t care if others go hungry or suffer as long as they have money and their lives are okay.”)
