(Manila) The capital of the Philippines came in 12th in this year’s race between the cities of the world to hit 2012. Manila shares the honor with Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore among others.
This year’s result is exactly the same as last year’s and the year before that but residents of the city still insist things can only get better.
“It’s very rare for us to have the opportunity to beat cities from developed nations like London or New York so this means a lot to us.” Manila resident Bing Juliano said.
London and New York ranked 25th and 32nd respectively entering the year 2012 a good number of hours after Manila.
This year’s biggest winners, however, are the cities of Apia (in Western Samoa) and Nukunonu (in Tokelau) both of which adopted a new time zone effective 29 December 2011 placing them from the bottom rung to first place in this year’s race.
“Everyone thought Apia and Nukunonu would come in 21 hours behind Sydney as usual but they pulled a last minute Hail Mary and surprised us all. A real Cinderella story those two cities…” sports commentator and annoying metaphor generator Jom Bonza said.
Residents of Manila celebrated its high ranking by setting off enough fireworks to place the city under smog.
